More than anything else, Chimes is a continual surprise. There have been, of course, many covers of Dylan songs but the beauty of this compilation is the sheer breadth and diversity, both in its interpretation and material, from the hits to the obscure.

In 1961, Dylan, the young man from Minnesota, arrived in New York with a guitar in his hand and the ambition to be a singer and songwriter. That same year, in England, Amnesty International was founded by lawyer Peter Benenson. Sixteen years later it was awarded the Nobel peace prize.

There were many tides rising in the early 1960s: Vietnam, civil rights movements, student demonstrations and the rush and shock of the new in popular culture. Yet, as always, there was famine, civil war, censorship and torture and the brinkmanship of the Cold War.

Amnesty was a voice for the voiceless and politically dispossessed; Dylan gave voice to the young generation, though he bridled at the suggestion he was a leader. Through his songs, he became the hero of the protest movement but his gift couldn’t be contained. All his songs were, in fact, protests, whether personal or political.

Songwriters are unanimous that he changed the game. Australian songwriter Shane Howard once said ”he gave us all jobs”. He was the pioneer poet who forged a new path for pop-rock music. This compilation is testament to that.

After more than five hours of covers, it ends with Dylan singing Chimes of Freedom, a man alone with his acoustic guitar and his words, singing for himself, singing to the world.

Before those ”chimes of freedom flashing”, first there is Johnny Cash with the Avett Brothers, performing One Too Many Mornings.

Then follows both the well-known and unknown. There are mainstream artists such as Patti Smith, Pete Townshend, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, Sting, Mark Knopfler, Joan Baez, Neil Finn, Carly Simon, Dave Matthews Band, Mick Hucknall, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams and Seal with Jeff Beck, sitting beside indie, hard-rock, blues, pop, world and jazz artists such as Ziggy Marley, My Morning Jacket, Rise Against, Queens of the Stone Age, Angelique Kidjo, Jack’s Mannequin, Tom Morello, Bad Religion and My Chemical Romance.

And then there are left-of-field performances that against all expectations work, the most conspicuous being Kesha’s Don’t Think Twice It’s All Right, without theatrics, without effects. Dylan purists might be shocked but the quartet’s rendition is so far out there it works.

Some might also be aghast at the inclusion of popster Miley Cyrus but her take on You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go is polished country, tasteful and heartfelt. At another point on the spectrum, Diana Krall gives a subdued, spare, yet elegantly jazz-tinged reworking of Simple Twist of Fate. Krall has said of performing Dylan: ”It’s a different form. You’re telling a story in different rhythms, in different verses. It’s hard to describe. It’s like singing Beowulf or something. This stuff goes deep.”

Bri Anglin, Christina Haswood and Mutiyat Hameed all were part of Lawrence High’s girls basketball program last year, but this season has brought them new challenges and responsibilities.

As juniors, both Haswood and Anglin were Lions role players, and Hameed was rarely called upon at the varsity level. As LHS coach Nick Wood put it, leadership wasn’t part of what they were asked to bring to the floor everyday.

Now that the trio makes up Lawrence’s small senior class, expectations have changed significantly. The varsity schedule can be a grind, and it has been up to the three seniors to guide a team that currently utilizes four juniors, two sophomores and two freshmen.

“They had to learn how to be vocal leaders and leaders by example,” Wood said. “A lot of our girls needed to be able to look up to somebody who’s been through that battle before.”

Anglin said Wood, who first started coaching the Class of 2012 when they were sophomores, has helped shape them into leaders.

“The younger girls really look up to us,” the senior post player said, “and I know I looked up to the seniors when I was a sophomore.”

So when a young player is struggling with something at a practice or game, Hameed said it is up to one of the LHS seniors to step in and lead them in the right direction.

“The young ones, they don’t know,” Hameed said. “They haven’t been at this level before.”

One of the biggest challenges the Lions seniors have encountered is a pair of winless droughts. Twice this season, LHS (6-13) has suffered through five-game losing streaks. When the team has gone through those frustrating stretches, Wood said it is hard on players and coaches alike, because they put in a lot of work. Not seeing results for that work can suck the life out of a team.

“We need that senior presence in the locker room when things aren’t going well,” Wood said.

The urgency for winning will no doubt increase, with just days left in the regular season. Haswood said it wasn’t until she, Anglin and Hameed were posing for some Senior Night photos that it hit her — their days competing at the high school level are numbered.

“It hasn’t been a reality until this week,” Haswood said. “It just makes me sad.”

Nothing would make her and the rest of the Lions happier than to knock off Free State in their final home game, at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. That goes not only for the seniors, but also juniors Monica Howard, Anna Wright, Bri Anderson and Kylie Seaman, sophomores Kionna Coleman and Sami Buffalomeat and freshmen Marissa Pope and Jolana Shield.

The mere thought of an LHS upset against Free State brought a huge smile to Anglin’s face — “I would love to get that win,” she said.

Wood, too, acknowledged a Lawrence victory in the City Showdown would mean “everything” to the team. The whole season would seem like a success for the Lions if they were able to pull it off.

“Finding a way to do that is going to be a difficult thing,” Wood said, “because obviously they’re extremely talented.”

The LHS coach said his team will have to do a great job on Free State’s shooters, not allowing anyone to get hot, and keep the Firebirds out of transition.

But that’s just half of the equation. “Offensively, we have to find a way to score,” Wood said, “and when we get good scoring opportunities, take advantage of them and finish them.”

Haswood said the Lions are looking forward to facing their rivals again, after losing 64-47 at FSHS on Dec. 16.

“Emotions are gonna be so high. You definitely don’t need motivation,” Haswood said. “It’s the best Senior Night game you can play.”

First of all, congratulations on the win! What have you been up to since being hailed as “The Voice”?

I have recorded my new record, “Come Through For You,” which has recently been released. I have also been performing for a lot of different events, such as the Orange Bowl, Rockefeller Christmas Tree Lighting, NHL All-Star Game, and corporate engagements for companies like Synnex, Make-A-Wish, Boys and Girls Club, etc.

We heard your daughters had actually been rooting for Vicci [Martinez, fellow finalist] instead of you! Is that true?

Yes.  They love Vicci, as do my wife and I.  Vicci is super talented and a wonderful person.

When you were here in Manila a few years ago, you were basically known as the guy who sang the R&B hit “Crazy.” How will you reintroduce yourself and your music to the people who knew you as such?

My music is Acoustic Soul, as I like to refer to it. I want to move the hearts of folks and if I can do that through my R&B-infused material or my more Pop-leaning acoustic rock, I want to take my audience on a journey through emotions.  As I say, the best compliment to me is when I hear that someone cried after listening to one of my songs. This is the highest form of flattery.

How has the show influenced or changed your musical style?

I had one of the best coaches, Adam Levine. Adam was always supportive of my song choice during the show and I made sure I maintained my artistic vision when making the record.  This show has changed my life as well as my family’s life.  Obviously financially but more importantly, through the second chance I received through winning the show.  I never thought I would get the opportunity to have a major label record release and here we are.  Hopefully there will be many more to come!

We got to talk to Adam a few months ago and he said you had blown him away the moment he’d heard you sing. How did you manage to stay grounded amidst all that praise?

I never took for granted my god-given gift and talent.  There were plenty of talented folks who had the ability to take this competition at any time.  My friend and competitor Dia Frampton came very close to taking the victory.  I always believe “what’s meant to be is meant to be” and I maintained that belief all the way through until they announced my name. WOW!

What was the toughest thing you’d had to do during the competition?

This is easy to answer—Be away from my family for so long.  I missed them sooo much!

Most memorable moment in the show?

When all four chairs turned around.  That was the first of many but it was monumental in the fact that that was when I really knew I had a chance.

Just saw the video for your new single “As Long As We Got Love” with Natasha Bedingfield and it’s such a happy, hopeful song. Does it set the tone for your new album?

Absolutely.  However, there are a few tearjerkers and surprise records that I felt compelled to add in.  One of my favorite records is “OK Here’s The Truth” which takes you on a journey until the end of the song when the twist occurs.  I will leave it at that and you can take the chance to listen to learn the story.

What’s next for Javier in 2012?
